Classic French Onion Soup Recipe

Ingredients:

To make classic French onion soup, you will need the following ingredients:
— 4 large onions, thinly sliced
— 4 tablespoons of butter
— 2 tablespoons of olive oil
— 2 cloves of garlic, minced
— 1 teaspoon of sugar
— 1/2 cup of dry white wine
— 6 cups of beef broth
— Salt and pepper to taste
— Baguette slices
— Gruyere cheese, grated

Instructions:

1. In a large pot, melt the butter and olive oil over medium heat. Add the sliced onions and cook until they are caramelized, about 30 minutes.

2. Add the minced garlic and sugar to the onions and cook for an additional 2 minutes.

3. Pour in the white wine and cook until it has mostly evaporated, about 5 minutes.

4. Add the beef broth to the pot and bring the soup to a simmer. Let it cook for 20-30 minutes to allow the flavors to meld together.

5. Season the soup with salt and pepper to taste.

6. While the soup is simmering, preheat your broiler. Place the baguette slices on a baking sheet and toast them until they are golden brown.

7. Ladle the soup into oven-safe bowls and top each one with a toasted baguette slice. Sprinkle a generous amount of Gruyere cheese on top of the bread.

8. Place the bowls under the broiler until the cheese is melted and bubbly, about 2-3 minutes.

Serving:

Classic French onion soup is best served hot, straight from the broiler. The cheesy bread on top adds a delicious crunch to the rich and flavorful soup. Enjoy this comforting dish as a starter or as a main course on a chilly evening.

Variations:

While the classic French onion soup recipe is delicious on its own, there are several variations you can try to customize the dish to your taste. Some popular additions include topping the soup with a poached egg, adding fresh herbs like thyme or parsley, or using different types of cheese such as Swiss or Parmesan.
